Martens is a kind of theater director of modern photography. He composes his pictures, he stages scenes and settings with delightful details, often with an opulent zest for intense color and dense scenery. In the past, he has found many of the locations for his arrangements in Russia, in anything from scrapped nuclear submarines to the dressing- rooms of revue theatres.
